Spotify Data Sets

Virgin Mobile has announced its customer won’t have to pay any data charges to use Spotify through their phones.

Virgin Mobile Spotify Free Data

A Virgin Media spokesman exclusively told Recombu at the company’s product showcase, that Virgin Mobile customers who buy Spotify from them will be able to listen to music over 3G on their mobile without paying data charges.

Virgin Mobile’s perk for free data in social media apps is quite a step down from VOXI. It’ll save you a little bit of data but isn’t their most important feature. Their data-free messaging scheme effectively gives you unlimited tweets, messages, pictures and videos on Facebook Messenger, Twitter and WhatsApp. To put this amount of data in perspective, with 3GB of data users can watch up to 12 hours of Netflix, depending on streaming quality. Update 2017/07/10: The Virgin Mobile tablet 3GB of data rate plans expired on July 8th. Now the telecommunication company is re-introducing its 2GB of data for $15 per month plan.

Earlier this year Virgin Media and Spotify announced a partnership to use the music streaming service across a range of platforms, including broadband, it’s digital TiVo set-top box and mobile phones.

This is a fantastic deal for Virgin Mobile customers. Spotify is incredibly data intensive, especially if you listen to it online, so it’s always best to sync your playlists offline over WiFi a feature available for Premium subscribers.

Spotify announced its mobile offering earlier this year and available across platforms: iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Phone, with a free and Premium offering.

Virgin Mobile has yet to confirm prices for the Spotify subscription, but we’ll update you when we find out more.

Virgin Mobile USA has added unlimited streaming from select music platforms to some of its plans. The music partners are iHeartRadio, Pandora, and Slacker Radio. Those services can be streamed data-free on the telecom’s U.S. mobile plans. More music platforms will likely be added in the future.

Several mobile companies have been allowing customers to stream music without it counting against their data limits. T-Mobile was an early leader in that trend, with its Music Freedom program. Some music brands have been pursuing exclusive bundles instead, such as a deal Spotify inked with Canada’s Rogers Communications offering customers a two-year free trial of its premium tier. Any arrangement with a telecom can expose a new audience to these streaming platforms, and may be a way for them to bring in additional cash flow. It’s a big win for the telecom too, since it can potentially dissuade customers from jumping to other providers with the cost saving of unlimited audio streaming.
